Seoul is turning Yeouido Park into a massive track for fitness enthusiasts next month, launching the 2026 Seoul Runners Festival on Oct. 24. The city government said Monday that the event, to be hosted at the park's Culture Plaza, will feature open races, community events and family activities designed to showcase the capital's vibrant outdoor culture. The festival, tied to the city's monthly Night Run Project series, centers on the Seoul Plus 10K, a 10-kilometer run from Culture Plaza across the Seogang Bridge and back. Organizers said the course emphasizes personal pace and the satisfaction of finishing over competitive times, and may still change before the event. Proceeds from the run, sponsored by Hanwha Financial PLUS, will fund donations supporting promising young track and field athletes. Also on the schedule is a "crew battle," in which four-member mixed teams run the same 10-kilometer course and are ranked by their combined times — a format aimed at running clubs that train together regularly. Oldest known gunpowder weapon in Korea discovered near minefield

Deep inside a hazardous zone once marked for landmine detection on Mount Geumseong in Naju, around 280 kilometers south of Seoul, archaeologists have uncovered what is now confirmed to be the oldest surviving gunpowder weapon in Korea. The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage said Monday that a three-year study has authenticated the artifact, known as the "Hwangja Hwatong" or Yellow-Character Hand Cannon. Measuring just under 25 centimeters long and weighing roughly 1 kilogram, the bronze handheld firearm offers unprecedented insight into early East Asian military technology. "This is an extraordinary discovery with immense academic, historical and cultural value," Cho Mi-soon, director of the National Naju Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, said during a press briefing at the National Palace Museum of Korea. "It comes from a crucial transitional period between the late Goryeo and early Joseon dynasties, when physical artifacts of firearms are exceptionally rare." From Guatemala to Sokcho: Young man comes to enlist in his father's homeland

When Guatemalan-born Kim Min-woo, 24, also known as Andres, suddenly appeared with his hair cut short, his father, Kim Dong-jun, 62, immediately realized what his son had decided to do. Min-woo, who had never visited Korea, had said since childhood that he wanted to “experience my father’s homeland firsthand.” The father and son looked into the enlistment procedures for dual nationals before boarding a flight to Korea. The first place Min-woo visited after arriving in Korea was Sokcho, Gangwon Province, his father’s hometown. He retraced his family roots by visiting Chilseong Shipyard where his grandfather worked, and the neighborhood where his father played as a child. On Sept. 12, Min-woo and his father visited Sokcho City Hall and met Mayor Lee Byung-sun. 2,000 years of Korean art, creativity to go on view in London

From ancient gilt-bronze ornaments to Nam June Paik’s video sculpture, a new British Museum exhibition will trace 2,000 years of Korean creativity through more than 180 works from Korea’s national collection. “Korea: 2,000 Years of Creativity” opens Oct. 1 at the British Museum’s Joseph Hotung Great Court Gallery and runs through Jan. 31, 2027. Jointly organized by the National Museum of Korea, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea and the British Museum, it is the final stop of an overseas tour built around works donated to the nation by the family of late Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee in 2021. Hoam Museum turns itself upside down for latest Art Spectrum show

YONGIN, Gyeonggi Provinde — A giant mural with a black-and-white illustration now blocks the stately front view of the Hoam Museum of Art’s lobby. Outside, enormous cartoon-like images climb its stone façade, while graffiti, colorful T-shirts and caps by subculture artists greet visitors inside. For an institution long associated with celadon, Joseon-era paintings and the refined beauty of its traditional Heewon garden, the transformation is deliberate. “We wanted to break the authority of Hoam,” Kwak June-young, head of modern and contemporary art department II at Leeum Museum of Art and Hoam Museum of Art, said during a press tour Monday.
